just wondered what everyone thinks is a good number of lumber yards I am onlevel 13 and have 3 lumber yards which I am in process of building up a level, do members recommend having many more or should it make a difference just by upgrading? I seem to be always waiting for wood?

5 is the maximum till level 65.
I personally put them all in and upgraded them as soon as I could as you say we always are waiting for resources.but this was my strategy to get the resident buildings upgraded as fast as I could.
This is a balance game space is a limiting factor also can't keep commercial buildings full at higher levels so it is about trying to juggle

As fred1471 says five is the maximum until you reach level 65 at this time. If you ever have to much you can sell the excess in the market place for cc's. Most players do end up never having enough resources to maintain there desires. So it would be wise to build all of the lumber Mills you can afford and upgrade them as soon as practical. While keeping the rest of your city in balance. Have a good time finding the equilibrium. ;)

To reinforce the point, one level 3 lumber yard will make 32 beams in one hour, which will sell for about 700 CC. So, with the market fee, you will make at least 18,000 CC per hour from each yard. That is way more than any house I have.
The same is true for brick yards; 16 bricks in 3 hours from level 3 brickyard; 64,000 CC in 3 hours.
To begin with have lots of workers and go for as much production as you cab sustain.
