is there any point to spending money upgrading houses?

Yes, It increases the capacity of residents in the household, yielding more experience, education points and cc's for your cities. Also with higher population makes doing the events easier to do. All of which makes the game more enjoyable.

It depends what you mean. If you mean, is there any point spending CC upgrading houses, then billyjim's answer is accurate. If you are asking should you spend MM (and thereby real money) upgrading houses the answer is probably no, unless you're in a hurry. There are things you can buy with MM that you can't get any other means, eg rent collectors, special permits, and so on. Probably best to save your MM for that, rather than house upgrades that you can always do in time without spending anything.

thanks for advice, I just always seem to be short of MM and resources to build with any hints about how to increase MM, keep watching films but don't know where else to find them?

You seem to have misunderstood me. Don't spend your MM on upgrading your houses - save it for something that you can't do by any other means.

To get enough CC to upgrade houses, you need to save it a little - it takes time, but this isn't a game for people in a hurry. To start with you'll need largely workers in your homes, to get PP. You need to keep your tomato supply going to start with, to feed your citizens via veg stands within suitable range of your houses. Once you've got lots of tomatoes, you can build lumber and beams. If you have enough lumber and beams, or lots of lumber and beams and not enough CC then sell the lumber and beams - they go for lots of money on the market.

If, of course, you've got it the other way around, and have lots of CC and not enough materials, you could always try and buy, though prices are probably far too steep for your average newbie.

Just don't spend MM on materials or upgrades, because in time you can always get the CC and materials. You won't, however long you play, ever get a residential tower permit or water tower permit, without spending MM on it (ok, you will, you can earn them from booster packs but that's a slow and unreliable process).

skb13 is correct this is a long term strategy game. What you have to do is make a plan and stick to it. Set up a series of priorities and work towards those goals. There is not a single path to that goal and each of us have to chart our own course. But, generally slow and steady growth and improvements to your city far out weigh rapid expansion. For every advancement you do there are consequences, some you can plan for, some you may over look. You can always collect rent yielding cc's and watching films will get you up to 150 MM's a day. That is not bad. Events, Tasks, and the bonus packs via the Emergency system all can help but again take time and resources away from construction. So good luck.:)

Edit -- Another thought == Try to resist changing your priorities often. Usually when you do that you end up spending time and resources towards one goal. Then get two thirds of the way there, and change priorities and start a new project with new different requirements. Aesop's fable tortoise and the hare comes to mind.

What we are saying is do not get impatient. All good things will come with time.

Rome and all great cities were not built in a day! The few that were conceived and built in a short period of time usually collapsed and vanished just as fast as they were built.

Remember why you are doing this for: Relaxation and a past time. So have fun and enjoy the process.

There is no finish line and no one to beat to get there. You and only you control the destiny of your city; Do as much or as little as you wish. No one's opinion matters but yours. :D

I will add this: I was ecstatic when the Mastery Challenges and Level 4 upgrades came out and am very proud of my Level 4 buildings....but I still have early buildings I haven't even upgraded to Level 2. By early buildings I mean designer duplexes and urban cottages and such; I am now almost to Level 44. I have been very selective about when and where I have upgraded, to maximize my revenues. I do go back and upgrade earlier buildings when my resources make that the right choice, and eventually will get to them all. Just upgraded several sunrise apartments, to increase my ep gains. As others have noted, this is a game of patience and planning. I am just now getting my first Level 4 tenement (had so many pp's stockpiled I have put off Level 4 on this baby for quite some time because other upgrades were needed and this is just wanting the building ;) ). But that's part of the fun in taking your time...upgrading because you want to see the cool new look, not because you 'have to' do it. Trust me, save the MM for buying the fancy buildings and deco (gold background on building permits) you normally don't get unless lucky with a booster or comet pack or the Loot-O'-Matic. Building resources are easy to stockpile once your facilities (mills/brickyards) are fully upgraded, though it still takes time. I have run full tilt production for weeks without touching a beam or brick (etc.) to gather what I needed for upgrading a single (higher Level) building. Relax and enjoy, take your time, and a year from now crow over your goodies :D
